PLAZA DE LAS AMERICAS
Manhattan, NY
-
Plaza de Las Americas (PDLA) an award-winning, high-profile, complex infrastructure construction project was implemented under the DOT NYC Plaza Program through a competitive application process. In partnership with NYCDDC, the City’s primary capital construction agency, the program is an essential component of the City’s effort to create quality open spaces accessible to the public within a 10-minute walk.
-
mirabal led the engineering consulting team providing resident engineering inspection services, in charge of the full construction implementation of the project including management, inspection, coordination and administration.
-
With an area encompassing over 14,000 SF, PDLA converted a City street, West 175 St., into a pedestrian plaza in Upper Manhattan. The project involved the installation of intricate patterns of decorative pavers, the installation of hundreds of Silva Cells—an innovative modular suspended pavement systems that supports large tree growth while providing an efficient stormwater management—multiple amenities including pedestrian-friendly special lighting and benches; four distinctive features integrated a storage utility column, a drinking fountain, and the City’s fifth climate-controlled automatic public toilet (APT), and public artwork.
-
PDLA also included infrastructure upgrades involving the installation of water mains and the construction of catch basins; curbs and sidewalks; street lighting and traffic signal work; utility upgrades and a full roadway resurfacing.
-
The new plaza offers the community a pleasant, attractive, and high-quality open space with upgraded infrastructure facilities.
-
NYCDDC selected and submitted the project for competition for the 2016 ENR’s Best Regional Project Award.
-
Awarded the 2017 Diamond Award, Engineering Excellence Awards, by the New York American Council of Engineering Companies (New York ACEC).
